Farkle Shark, You Are Not Stupid by Rita Emmett and Irina Bulgaru (Book Review #119)

“Everyone is a genius.

But if a fish is judged by how well it climbs a tree,

it will live its entire life feeling stupid.

~~ Attributed to Albert Einstein.”

This review was kindly requested by Ben Jackson.

The book begins with such a strong message. To accept your limitation and embrace your potential. Farkle Shark has a few monkey friends that can climb trees. They bully him and tell him that he is a stupid Shark because he cannot climb. Farkle gets very upset and shares his sad feelings with Sparkle.

Sparkle explains to him that everybody is smart about something BUT nobody is smart about everything!

What a wonderful message and lesson to teach our youth. We live in a society that forces you to blend in and to be like the norm. What if you are unique? Or your abilities are different than others? Should you feel set back and stupid? Should you feel insecure and unworthy?

The other beautiful thing about this book was that when Farkle felt bullied he went to an older shark for help. She listened, assisted and in fact dealt with the bullying head on, literarily.

The picture illustrations were sweet, and there was a subtext of comedy within the content that made the book more appealing to its audience.

The ending of this book is strong and funny and very effective to a child’s mind, and for that, I highly recommend this book to parents that are looking for decent books.

  1. Thank you Jeyran, I am delighted with your comments. Ben is teaching me about promoting Farkle Shark. It’s my first picture book. My first time on Goodreads. You are my first review … and I am thrilled with it. I told Ben your write-up is MUCH better than anything I wrote to describe this book. Thank you for taking the time, energy, wisdom and effort to create this review. It is very much appreciated.
