Evolving as a Writer by Dennis Scheel

As a writer, we all learn a good deal by reading other people’s work, but we must not forget the old rule of experience. The more that we write, the more used to it, we can get. I, for one, have a lot to learn. If I look at just my work from a few years ago, I can see how, even in that short time, I have evolved over time.

But couldn’t I just take a short cut to reach the goal?

This is a valid question, but as valid as it is, by the same resounding strength, I can say NO. Experience can only be learned by experience. By finding the way that works for only you, others might aid to steer you on the right path and suggest which directions to go, but only you can learn what works for you.

            Maybe the suggestions can be enough?

True, it could be, it just wouldn’t be ideas you developed, just as with everything in life, we grow by time, who you were ten years ago is not who you would be today, the same thing applies in writing, and the same goes for bad writing, you didn’t learn the right way. If you continue a way which would be bad, it would be ingrained into you; it would be hard to break loose.

Most writers become better by the passing years. You can tell this by reading their ongoing work, as their writing styles as well as how they tackle a tale could have changed.

My first book; No Way Back- The Underworlds had a long way. I got the first part of the idea when I was a mere boy at eight, the story in my head evolved and changed, to the point where it was written 25-30 years later. A lot had changed. What I, as a child thought of, was different than what it was as an adult, few things remained the same, but still with some variations. Because what we, as writers go through in life, also affects our stories, even in small ways.

This is my story of how I evolved as a writer, for my novels as well as in poetry. Writing books actually helped me when I wrote poetry. How did you evolve, or have your journey just begun?

Dennis Scheel has always had the stories running in his head, but not until after his accident, which left him mute and paralyzed on the right side was he able to tell them. After he worked his way back, he wanted to try to tell his story once more since an acquaintance told him there was talent in his poetry, he had been convinced by his ex not to write for ten years, she insisted he had no talent. This time tried in English since all other times failed. Finally, he succeeded, and he never stopped writing since.
