Immortalize by Donald Furrow-Scott (Book Review #789)
Immortalize is a pair of novels set in the Phoenician Mediterranean, circa 760BCE. It is a historical fiction story about the ancient sea kingdom of Phoenicia trying to guard and protect the Pillars of Hercules at the Straits of Gibraltar and thus, its shipping access to the mineral-rich land of Tartessus in south-western Spain.
A tasing of wine history begins with telling us a story about the Phoenicians, secretive people of the sea. They have a free and wild living trading and exploring the oceans possessing vibrant religion and legendary skills. Controlling a sea kingdom from one end of the world to the other make them Phoenicians equal to all the other kingdoms, impossible to conquer and rich for trade.
When Phraortes embarks on a third voyage to a colony in order to become its new governor, he hires a winemaker for the colony named Kabiri. At first, Phraortes does not trust him and thinks he works for the Assyrians; however, their relationship grows becoming stronger.
The story then follows through with the two characters circling the eastern Mediterranean, passing many countries and captivating the reader with their adventures.
The literature was outstanding, and the storytelling was superb. I thoroughly recommend this book and think it’s suitable for anyone who is a fan of the Phoenician culture.
