Success at Doing the Wrong Thing- From BigLaw to Big Tech by C.C. Max

My first foray into creative writing started shortly after my first job as an attorney in a large law firm in New York City. The sequence of discovery was no coincidence. It was the first time in my life I was consistently exposed to a level of material so mind-numbing that, out of necessity, it awoke a dormant creative part of me that I had kept suppressed.

I was perusing the law firm employee discounts page and located the Gotham Screenwriter’s workshop. Before I knew it, I was writing a sequel to The Bodyguard, followed by a Scream-style slasher set in a law school setting and then brainstorming a live action screenplay for Sleeping Beauty inspired by Christopher Nolan’s movie Inception. I discovered how difficult it was to sell a spec script (one that was not solicited by a studio), but I also never felt so excited and genuinely happy to work on projects.

Why had I suppressed this part of me? Lie # 47-  “I am not creative, so I’ll forego this career path.”

I never set out to write a self-help book. Rewind 20 Years: 50 Lies That Shaped Career Paths came about more as a form of catharsis, a book that helped me first. Last year, a decade-plus legal career led me to work as an attorney for a Big Tech company. This was the top of the game. I had arrived. I should have been elated, but that same sense of dread I experienced at the beginning of my career loomed large.

If I followed the tried and true path to success, how did I end up so unfulfilled? Did other millennials all end up in a similar situation? If not, how did their career path lead to fulfillment? This book includes anecdotes and insights from those in the legal, finance, engineering, medical, teaching, radio broadcasting, marketing, and sales professions to illuminate lies about college, graduate school, jobs, love and ourselves. My sincere hope is that it opens up paths for the next generation closed off only by the lies we believe.
