Letters to the Empire by Vanshika Jain (Book Review #2214)

Letters to the Empire is a searing and unforgettable debut by sixteen-year-old Vanshika Jain — a bold and brilliant retelling of colonial history that centers the voices too often erased. Blending historical fiction with recovered archival letters, the novel plunges into the brutal realities of the British Empire’s grip on India and South Africa, giving readers an unfiltered look into famine, forced labor, and intergenerational survival.

At the heart of the novel is Vanshi, a spirited 16-year-old girl whose courage and determination lead her across a colonized India in search of answers — and freedom. Her journey, stitched together through powerful first-person accounts, uncovers the hidden threads between characters, regions, and generations, each shaped by empire but resisting its erasure in their own ways.

Inspired by the author’s real-life internship at the Library of Congress, Letters to the Empire is a rare feat — combining academic rigor with creative storytelling. Jain’s access to never-before-seen letters and documents from historical figures like Churchill and Gandhi forms the backbone of the book’s revelations. The result is not just a gripping story, but a critical rewriting of colonial history from the inside out.

What sets this novel apart is its fierce empathy. Jain does not shy away from the horrors of imperialism, but she also refuses to let trauma be the only narrative. Through resilient characters, interconnected family ties, and sweeping historical moments, she builds a world where resistance and remembrance hold equal weight.

A necessary read for anyone interested in history, justice, and storytelling that matters, Letters to the Empire proves that age is no barrier to brilliance — and truth knows no borders.

  1. What would make this book personally interesting to me is not only reading that historical documents back up the novel, but also citing the reviewer’s comment, “she (author) also refuses to let trauma be the only narrative.” Many thousands of books have been written about colonial oppression, but come out badly one-sided, ignoring vast terrible internal conflicts from extending through pre-colonial times. It sounds like Letters to the Empire would be a refreshing and balanced story worth reading.
