The Bystander by John David (Book Review #2260)

The Bystander, written by John David, is a traditional thriller with unusual depth, thanks to its moral overtones. It begins with a public shooting, which is captured on television, and the person who stops the shooting is called a “citizen hero.” From the start, an all-encompassing, complex story unfolds…realistically. The Bystander is a thriller about journalism, media manipulation, political agendas, and the cost of seeking the truth. It reads like a movie. The author uses real-life examples of how the media affects our lives and draws on other books in the same genre.

In the author John David’s book The Bystander, the main character, Pete Lemaster, is a former television reporter who becomes successful after his viral fame following a mass shooting he witnessed and filmed. The author, with a truly masterful writing style that combines suspense, satire, and dark comedy, ensures the reader has a great time reading it. The dialogue feels very real, which gives the character and story much more weight.

Pete Lemaster has a conflict between the success of his career and his moral obligation. The author clearly shows that there is no way to determine what is real in our world of social media, which creates what seems true today. The author used two themes: journalism and social media, to provide a different perspective on what we believe to be true in our current society.
