A Nest of All Kinds: Jewels of the House Divine (Book Review #2269)

Michael C. Reid’s A Nest of All Kinds: Jewels of the House Divine is an exceptional first novel that breaks the boundaries of the traditional genre with an extraordinarily vivid, darkly elegant fantasy experience. The work reads as a history from ancient times, interwoven with political intrigue, prophetic horror, and an intense sense of humanity.

The narrative is located within the chaotic Rasnaian Empire and revolves around the Empress Anastasia, who, after suffering the death of her infant son, is forced into a lethal game of succession, secrets, and betrayal. This tragic incident that begins as an accidental loss, becomes a multi-dimensional puzzle that includes alchemical toxins, ill-fated romances, ancestral curses, and conspiracies involving both church and state.

Reid’s writing is evocative of historical grandiosity, filled with profound intellectual and emotional depth. Each character is portrayed with amazing psychological intricacies; however, the character of Anastasia, especially, possesses a true feeling of realness as she struggles against not only the enemies of the crown, but the phantoms of prophecy, and the fractured court that surrounds her. Khaile and Rhaske, the dual emperors, each represent vast emotional conflicts between innocence and duty.

Unlike anything else in literature, the way this book is written is unique in the sense that Reid fuses many diverse genres into what readers will consider a dark fantasy, historical worldbuilding, and fast-paced actions. It offers stories of the assassination of royalty, poisonings, secret organizations and alliances formed out of the desperation of political rebellions, as well as gladiators, culminating in a climax unlike any other, both horrifying and unbelievably moving.

Every chapter creates the atmosphere of a box of jewels, presenting additional perspectives on treachery, sacrifice, and legacy. If you’re a fan of the lush royal court intrigue of Game of Thrones, the poetic beauty of The Song of Achilles, the hauntingly rich moral complexities of The Poppy War, you are guaranteed to be spellbound by the journey.

A Nest of All Kinds is an epic examination of the multiple legacies created through prophecy and redemption. It does not merely ask you to observe; it demands your attention.
