“Mind Fusion,” written by Geoff Barnes, is an exciting mix of science fiction, mystery, and emotional coming-of-age story that really draws you in as you read about the unfolding race against time. At the centre of the plot is the disappearance of Peter Bartlett, a scientist who leaves unanswered questions, a battered home office, and a family dealing with the loss of a family member, with Mr. Taylor, his former assistant, now in charge of the household. The story unfolds as Johnny, Peter’s 10-year-old son, receives a notice from his father that he has time-traveled 1 year into the past.
Geoff Barnes does a great job of taking a high-concept science-fiction storyline and viewing it through a child’s eyes. The process of dealing with grief, confusion, and the ability to hold onto what you know in your heart is developed through Johnny’s character and how he grows through this process. Barnes depicts this process beautifully through Johnny’s struggles after the loss of his father, while at the same time recognizing that something is not quite right about Mr. Taylor and that the events that transpire are all tied together.
Barnes builds a wonderful sense of pacing and atmosphere throughout his book. He did an excellent job of building the stakes throughout and created an outstanding balance between suspense and moments of caring for the characters as we watch Johnny and his friends investigate and search for the truth. The time travel element is used in a way that works for the story but does not overshadow the book, and adds to the urgency that moves the story along.
In addition to the science fiction ideas, Mind Fusion also focuses on themes of trust, courage, and resilience of young children when faced with the dangers of getting adult-sized threats. Mind Fusion has something that appeals to readers who enjoy intelligent science fiction with an emotional touch, while also offering a great adventure and emotional depth throughout the journey. Mind Fusion has great plotting, imagination, and thoughtful writing. It is a book you will continue to think about long after you finish reading it because it reminds us that, even over time, family bonds remain a potent force.
