The story takes place in a playful, colorful world called Shapes Academy where the Big Blue Circle has trouble understanding the importance of showing kindness. Through the guidance of his mentor, the Little Blue Circle, he finally learns the lesson on empathy and understanding from a friend’s perspective. By providing this exciting backdrop for the story, Almeida encourages children to understand how their actions affect others and how they can interact with peers in social situations safely and with compassion.

Almeida has created an incredibly well structured story that weaves together educational concepts with the story’s theme seamlessly. The reader will learn primary colors, basic shapes, and how to compare size through the storyline, making this book appealing to young readers on a cognitive and emotional level. The end of the book includes reflection questions for parents and educators to facilitate meaningful discussions and guide young children through processing the lessons they learned in the book.

The illustrations and story connect to create an appealing and appropriate book for early readers. The characters are simple but expressive and provide a connection to the story for young readers. Almeida’s background as a Pre-K teacher and Certified Meditation and Mindfulness Instructor provides a background to her writing skills and her understanding of the emotional development of children. She has a passion for teaching mindfulness and kindness to children early and often, and her commitment to this passion shines through in this beautifully written book. Being Kind Is Cool provides kids with a foundation for developing kindness as a way of life, making it a must-have for every child’s library. Almeida’s work and dedication to creating impactful lessons will continue with future releases in her series, such as Being Mindful Is Cool.
