Hypersound by Diavolo Ray is an epic, hybrid coming of age story steeped in nostalgia, music, and magic realism. It follows the tumultuous journey of Jet James, a boy who suffers under the weight of trauma, finds solace in sound, and ultimately uses art, love, and resilience to transform himself.
In the 1970s, Jet and his younger sister lived a difficult childhood, struggling under the abuse of their alcoholic father and the mother who was blind to their dysfunction due to her religious convictions. This religious commune, located in the shadows of the towering redwoods of California, is where Jet first experiences suffering and wonder. Jet finds his refuge in an unlikely place, through the radio dial. Within its static and spectral tones, Jet discovers his gift to amplify the smallest sounds, to tune into the universal rhythm that vibrates beneath every aspect of life.
In the 1980s, as Jet’s family relocates to Portland, his struggles become more pronounced. While being bullied and feeling alienated, Jet seeks an escape through the New Wave music scene, where it becomes both a sanctuary for him and a means of defining his identity. This is where Diavolo Ray’s prose shines the most brightly; it vividly communicates the electricity of the dance floor, the fragility of youth, and the redemptive power of sound. Throughout this time, Jet is mentored by a retired composer and a music professor who encourage Him to develop his gifts, teaching him that, even amidst chaos, his artistry can continue to grow.
The heart of Hypersound, however, is Jet’s relationship with Violet. Their connection transcends mere physical attraction and suggests a love that transcends time, space, and life itself. Through their relationship, the novel’s darkness is intertwined with warmth; it reminds readers that, no matter how noisy or dissonant specific chapters of life may seem, harmony can still be attained.
What sets Hypersound apart from other coming-of-age novels is Ray’s ability to masterfully weave multiple genres into a cohesive whole. Ray uses autofiction to fuse cultural history, trauma and healing, supernatural elements of romance, and thrillers through Jet’s discovery of horror film soundtrack production. This combination results in a beautifully told story that is both personal and expansive, both intimate and relatable to a broader audience.
With its rich descriptive language, musical rhythms, and emotionally charged narratives, Hypersound brings an era to life while revealing timeless themes of growth and discovery. Diavolo Ray has created an exciting and memorable book that resonates in your mind, heart, and soul long after you close it.
