Sparky Lost Her Flame by Regina McDonald (Book Review #667)

Sparky lost her flame is a children’s story about a dragon that refuses to brush her teeth. She lies to her parents about doing so, and as a consequence, at school, she fails to create flames, or when she does, it smells bad.

Sparky realizes that lying is wrong and that she is embarrassed in front of her friends, who can create perfect flames. When she returns, she lets her mother know about the trouble she has faced, and her mother provides her with a brush and toothpaste to remedy the situation.

I particularly enjoyed how the mother didn’t tell the child off for lying in the first place. The story portrayed the motion of displaying what consequences we face when we don’t listen or do as we like. I believe that is a good message to teach children.

I wasn’t a big fan of the illustrations or color coordination. The red and green did irritate my eyes, but all together, I believe the book was suitable for a young toddler to have.

I would recommend this book to parents that are looking for dragon stories and children’s stories.
