Embracing Vulnerability: My Journey as an Author by Hawa Who

Becoming an author is more than writing—it’s about embracing vulnerability and connecting with readers through authentic storytelling. When I began writing Petals of My Heart, I knew it would be deeply personal. The themes of love, loss, and self-discovery are drawn from my own life, and writing became an act of self-reflection and courage.

Through poetry, I explored complex relationships, particularly with my mother, and learned that honesty in writing opens a space for others to relate. Vulnerability, though intimidating, is what creates the deepest connections between the writer and the reader. As I wrote each poem, I uncovered more about myself and, surprisingly, found that my words resonated with others navigating their own emotional landscapes.

Another important aspect of my journey is discovering my voice as a writer. I’m originally from Ghana and grew up in New York City, which gave me a unique lens through which I see the world. This blend of cultural experiences deeply influences my writing, allowing me to weave together stories of personal growth, family dynamics, and resilience.

For aspiring writers, my advice is simple: Be true to your story. Writing authentically is the most powerful way to reach an audience, whether through poetry, fiction, or memoir. As I continue my journey as an author, I hope Petals of My Heart inspires readers to explore their own stories and emotions with honesty and courage.

  1. I agree, to write is to be vulnerable. As you wrote your story, what criteria did you use when deciding what vulnerable situations to share?
