Hunting the Red Fox by W. Kenneth Tyler, Jr. (Book Review #2264)

A delightful combination of humor, a fast-moving plot, and unexpected twists appears in W. Kenneth Tyler, Jr.’s delightful historical fiction novel: Hunting the Red Fox. Roger Mace, the aspiring author, was searching for the untold stories of ordinary people. Through a combination of chance encounters and interviews with Perry Barnes, he uncovers an incredible saga of man’s fascinating journey through World War II-era America, from Perry’s exploits in sabotage and the theft of priceless jewels to his Hollywood connections and playing on the PGA Tour.

The novel unfolds through successive chapters that showcase Perry’s colorful, improbable resume, each revealing more wonderful surprises about his life, culminating in Perry’s transformation from someone Roger is cautious about to a man who realizes how excellent Perry really is.

Full of sharp dialogue, beautiful imagery, and lots of laugh-out-loud stories, Hunting the Red Fox is written in crisp and playful prose. It combines light-hearted satire with thoughtful reflections on themes such as redemption, purpose, and the search for true love, never dulling the historical backdrop but instead using it as a vibrant backdrop against which extraordinary characters and storylines unfold.

Ultimately, though, the heart of Hunting the Red Fox is what elevates its appeal. Perry Barnes is not merely a con artist, a covert agent, or a professional golfer. Instead, he is a person seeking redemption, meaning, and a more profound sense of connection with others. To say that Perry Barnes’ incredible story is created for you to identify with those who struggle to find those same attributes is an understatement; therefore, it is even more significant that Tyler is so adept at writing Perry without drawing him as a caricature.

Tyler’s first novel reads like that of an accomplished novelist rather than a debut writer. If you enjoy stories of quirky heroes and intelligent villains with outrageous plots, but at the end have an emotional appeal, Hunting the Red Fox is the book for you!
