How a Software Engineer Became a Writer of Kids’ Books by Nisha Talagala

I have been a software engineer for many years. When I was growing up, I loved math and computers and programs, and did not particularly enjoy talking with people! I found out as I got older that writing, in some form, is important for pretty much any job. The first type of writing I did was still very technical though. I wrote research papers and my dissertation. I was still very focused on facts and worked hard to keep my personal opinions private! I became more comfortable putting my ideas down on paper when I started writing blogs. I also realized that I enjoyed teaching – and writing became a big part of that.

So – how did I get from there to writing kids’ books? It started with my daughter. She has changed many aspects of my life. It is because of her that I rekindled my love of teaching and realized that I really enjoy teaching kids. I now teach kids Artificial Intelligence, a topic that I have worked on for many years in a professional context. My interest in teaching kids AI came from teaching her AI, and it was a natural process from there to writing books for kids on AI.

What helped me was starting with what I knew (software and technology) and what I was learning (how to talk to kids), and combining them to find ways to get kids excited about the technologies that are all around them. I have now written seven books for Artificial Intelligence for Kids aged 4-7 (you can find them at They cover topics like Digital Assistants, AI in Phones, and other aspects of AI that are around our kids every day. The books are free for anyone to download on PDF. If you would like hard copies you can buy them from Amazon or Google – the links are on the page. These books are part AIClub.World – whose mission is to bring AI Literacy to K12 students worldwide. You can find out more about us at
