Pigs in Paradise: A Fairy Story Most Absurd by Roger Maxson (Book Review #1920)

*Pigs in Paradise* by Roger Maxson is a hilariously satirical and thought-provoking novel that blends literary flair with magical realism and humour. This politically charged fairy tale critiques religion in politics, specifically targeting American evangelicalism while celebrating freedom of expression.

The story kicks off with Blaise giving birth to Lizzy, a “red calf” on a farm in Israel, sparking global fervour among the faithful who believe this event will herald the return of the Messiah. However, when Lizzy is found blemished and unfit for sacrifice, disappointment ensues. Among the disheartened are two American evangelical ministers who witnessed these events firsthand.

Maxson’s narrative takes a wild turn as Pope Benevolent absolves the Jews, indulges in karaoke with Rabbi Ratzinger, and the Berkshire boar, Boris, becomes the centrepiece of a bizarre last supper. The ministers, not to be outdone, stage a nativity pageant, and Mel the mule ascends to papal glory as Pope Magnificent, complete with all the trappings of the position.

The absurdity continues as the animals are transported to America for the annual Passion-Play parade in Wichita, Kansas. Their final stop is a Christian farm and barn, where the relentless barrage of televised sermons contrasts sharply with the reality of their circus-like environment. Eventually, the animals, fed up with the constant noise, chase Mel away, and the legendary black Belgian stallion, Manly Stanley, delivers a symbolic kick to the TV monitors, granting a brief but poignant moment of silence and peace.

Maxson’s debut novel, written over nine years, showcases his satirical prowess and a keen eye for the absurdities of religious and political intersections. *Pigs in Paradise* is a must-read for anyone who enjoys sharp wit, clever commentary, and a touch of magical realism. It’s a fun and engaging story for every living, breathing, normal person looking to be entertained and challenged in equal measure.
