Storm of Arranon by R.E. Sheahan (Book Review #51)

This review is written for Online Book Club.

“I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.”

Erynn is an intercept pilot. There are things she knows about her past that influences the future. Her father is from Arranon, and her mother is from Korin, enabling her to have powers from both sides within her. When Korin and Arranon are at war, she discovers exactly what these powers are and learns about a prophecy that is connected to the planets. She can save everyone only if she finds the way to unlock it.

Jaer, the handsome hero that assists Erynn in escaping, becomes her love interest however the story mostly focuses on Erynn.

This heroine has the ability to connect to animals, and that was a sweet touch to the story. The book is packed with drama, and the author manages to create a beautiful fantasy world that one could vision in their mind as they read it. There is plenty of action, fighting, tension, and suspense.

This science fiction story has a fascinating plot and interesting character building. The ending is not like the normal kind you read and provides anticipation for wanting more, yet not displeased with the outcome.

There are many authors that tend to mix in various genres with their plots but are not that skillful in succeeding. They often confuse the reader or get them lost in their thoughts, however, Storm of Arranon is an exception. You sincerely feel the emotions, the turmoil and understand the story completely. The literary standard of this book was in such capacity, where you would feel and grow with the characters. This factor alone should earn and qualify the book to be four stars.

This book is suitable for young adults as well as anyone that likes to read on science fiction & fantasy.

The only thing I would change is the cover. It is absolutely hideous, and I am not sure why the author selected it unless she wanted to make the following point:

Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Baghdad the Final Gathering by Ahmad Ardalan (Book Review #313)

This is a beautiful story about Omar and his family. As we all know, there are no winning sides when it comes to war. This book narrates the hardship an Iraqi family has to endure due to the consistent off and on wars conducted in his country.

The book displays a beautiful description of the city and clarifies the misperception westerners have regarding what social norm is in Iraq.

It was fascinating to read how sanctions affected the people and the quality of life, they were so desperate to keep. The reality of every invasion is that many are abused. The author did not shy away from that either, and by doing so, he created an everlasting emotional bond for the reader, making us feel strongly about the Iraqi people and what they really go through.

The work was written strongly, and I enjoyed the message that came from reading the book. We can always rise above the circumstances the world puts us in. For that, I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys reading about wars and wishes to know how both sides suffer.

Erasing Scars by Dr. James D. Okun MD, Evangelita Goodwell (Book Review #21)

“Millions of Americans are afflicted with genital herpes with tens of thousands of new cases being reported each year. This ravaging disease afflicts its sufferers with both physical and emotional scarring, and while effective treatments for the physical aspects of the disease have been developed in recent years, relatively scant attention has been given to the emotional trauma associated with the disease. And even less attention has been given to the connection between patients’ stress levels and recurrences of herpes outbreaks.” By Erasing Scars

Review

Erasing Scars provides a program and a method towards preventing outbreaks caused by the herpes virus. It does not advocate for you to replace or substitute any of your current medication and it certainly does not provide a magical solution to any problem. It simply points out the crucial part of understanding what leads to the outbreak of the disease and how you can prevent it from happening, or at least moderately resolve it.

When I initially started reading this book I felt overwhelmed with the information, however; slowly I realized that Erasing Scars is not just a book creating awareness to Herpes, it is also offering new theories and developments that can be proven to work. “Aesthetic Realism” is the philosophy offered in this book, developed by the poet and critic Eli Siegel and is the main breakthrough for this disease.

As Dr. Okun studies more into this philosophy, he discovers that there is a link between deep psychological pain, vision, and the herpes infection. This is where the book caught my attention. I have never read this anywhere through my studies. It is a fascinating discovery, and from there I did not wish to put the book down anymore.

Dr. Okun believes that “Aesthetic Realism teaches people an accurate way of dealing with the stresses inherent to life, and its role in alleviating stress.” He is convinced that “Aesthetic Realism is directly connected with the body’s own immune responses.” The book also covers what the meaning of stress is and offers many subject examples to solidify its discovery.

In summary, I recommend this book to anyone that is open to new medical discoveries and innovative remedies to healing.

Bell Mountain by Lee Duigon (Book Review #48)

Most people do not expect much content or deeper insightful things, in a children’s book. However, Bell Mountain is one of those books that you can be rest assured in containing more than you expected.

The story has religious references and is a beautiful tale about two children on a mission to ring the bell of Bell Mountain. There is a secret behind this assignment and as they go through climbing this mountain they encounter many challenges. Aside from the assassin that attempts to stop them, they have to also defend themselves from beasts, hunters, bandits and more.

The people have forgotten about God. Praying is rarely done and is mostly unanswered. It is the call of God that has these two children, Jack and Ellayne on this mission and of course when you have God on your side, all will be well, won’t it?

Bell Mountain takes you on, an extraordinary voyage that was pleasant to the eyes and warm the heart. In my opinion, the book is suitable for all ages and not just for young adults. You truly care for the characters and as for the pace of the story; the beginning may have been a little slow. However, without that backstory, I don’t think the book would have had the big impact at the end.

Prepare yourself for a sweet and sour journey. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this Author.

1001 Islands by K. T. Munson (Book Review #312)

1001 islands is a Sci-Fi Fantasy novel written in a sea world where 1001 Islands posses characters such as witches, pirates, a princess and much more. There are multiple storylines, two of which have romantic hints to it and each plot is as intriguing as the next.

Once the plots combine, the work then becomes an epic experience. The characters are all well developed, and each have their own drawn personalities. I enjoyed how the female characters were strong, and the love interest was delightful to read.

The work does possess adult contact, and the ending was sudden and unexpected. However, the entire experience was wonderful, and I recommend this book to fantasy readers.

September Sky by John A. Heldt (Book Review #46)

September Sky is a story written about two men, Chuck and Justin. This father and son end up taking a trip to make amends over the time they have not spent together due to work and study. While on the ship they are offered a way to go back in time using a time machine. The two venture into the 1900’s where the great hurricane in Galveston, Texas happened.

They discover many things about their family’s history. While cruising in the past, they decide to solve a murder case and prevent an innocent man from conviction. While accomplishing all this, they fall in love with two women. During their time in the past, they are restricted with instructions and have to come back in a specified time.

This is a beautiful story with accurate historical references and a thoroughly researched plot. The concept of the story is well written and the literary standard is up to speed. I found the pace of the story to be side tracked at times. However, it would then faithfully return on its main course, so it did not bother me as much. It has a beautiful ending that is a pleasant surprise, and once you reach it, you feel satisfied and happy.

September Sky focuses on the main character’s emotions and feelings. Therefore, you can easily handle and feel more connected to them and the story. They have to face a devastating hurricane. Will they be able to survive it? The time they can stay in the past is limited so how are they going to say goodbye to the women they fall in love with? There are many delightful twists and turns in this exciting ordeal of a journey.

I look forward to reading the next book and wonder what adventures these two can unfold. I recommend this tale to anyone that loves time travel, suspense, and romance books.

The Gift Of Noah by Victor Wilkie (Short Book Review #45)

When a blessing knocks on your door do you return it or keep it?

It is almost Christmas and Jayce has been reflecting on her life and situation for a while. She has everything she wants and needs; however she still feels a void in her life. One snowy evening as she is praying to God asking him to show her the way and to give her a sign she hears a knock on her door. A small baby named Noah is being offered to her with a note informing her to keep him, until further notice.

Not sure of what she is supposed to do; Jayce decides to take care of the baby until the mother decides to show up giving her answers. The next day Noah’s mother comes to Jayce’s door and clears up the reason why she cannot have the baby and asks Jayce to be the legal guardian.

Jayce is a businesswoman and has a partner that has asked her to marry him. The baby is not what she was asking for and is definitely going to make a big change in her life. How is she going to cope with all this change? Can she keep the baby and remain living the way she is?

I found this short story to be a sweet little Christmas tale. There was a lot more dialogue than backstory content to the book. The back and forth conversations between Jayce and Kyle were funny, and the pace of the story had a nice motion to it. The overall ending was a surprise but short. This tale has great potential in becoming something bigger, and I look forward to reading more from this Author.
