The Last Families by Carla Doria (Book Review #1201)

The last families is a fantasy story set on the Island of Gambir, where the remaining families of talents have found refuge after their land’s destruction. Each family possesses certain skills, and some don’t really like the other.

Things take a turn when Yarisha, the mind reader, falls in love with Malakay, a member of the Ninfire family. Their relationship is profound upon, and so the story takes its turn with the conflicts and the secrets the new land brings to play.

I enjoyed how the dystopian book was fast-paced, filled with interesting scenes and had an emphatic tone to it. Yarisha has a strong personality and is immediately likeable. The author has written an enjoyable story and has left enough for additional possible sequels.

Each chapter is dedicated to a certain character and their narrative. This provided a dynamic set of tales and increased its imaginative nature.

I recommend this book to fantasy dystopian readers.
