A Wife for the Devil BY Shruti Rao (Book Review #1264)

A wife for the devil is a Victorian historical romance. The story begins with Elizabeth Lavoisier, a widow of 24 years of age and the illegitimate child of the Baron’s younger sister and an Indian soldier. She lives with her uncle, Baron Deverill. They aren’t very kind to her, and since she is penniless and her mother is being cared for by them, she has no choice but to comply with everything and the living condition she is given.

Her cousin, Miranda, on the hand, has different plans for Elizabeth. Consumed with jealousy and just complete dislike of Elizabeth, she forces her to do as she is told, and that includes convincing the dashing Hugh Atwood to court Miranda.

The literature is written very well. You instantly get involved and feel a bond with Elizabeth. The immediate understanding of the situation prepares you for what is to happen next, and I believe that made the plotline sweet and exciting to read.

I enjoyed this book as it also provided a look at the Victorian period and its social limits and expectations.

I recommend this book to those who like multicultural and interracial romance stories.
