Writing Even When You Don’t Think You Can By Kristin Durfee

Writing a novel can sometimes it can feel like being in one of those old cartoons where the character makes this herculean effort to get to the top of a mountain…only to see thousands of other mountains along the horizon.
You are not alone.
I hope these small tips and tricks can help you get to the top of the mountain, see the other peaks around you and say, “Well this will be a fun adventure!”
Know what you’re writing
I find creativity peters out when you don’t know where you’re going. The map’s turned upside down, and you swear you’ve passed that tree three times before.
I suggest you write a one to two page summary. Doesn’t matter if you are halfway through you book. Take a small break and write down your beginning, middle, and end.
This will be your road map and help ground you back in your story when you get lost.
Take a walk…but bring something to write with
Take a stroll around your block or a neighborhood park, some place where you can smell fresh air and let your mind wander But make sure you bring something (your phone, a notebook and pen) to write it down. Trust me, no matter how many times you tell yourself over and over you won’t forget, you will.
Take a typing test
This one sounds silly but I preach it all the time. There’s something about your fingers flying mindlessly over a keyboard that can help shake loose the cobwebs. Take a couple one to two minute typing tests (a quick internet search will yield a bunch of free ones) and let your fingers fly.
Bonus, you’ll get faster at typing.
Don’t be afraid to prioritize your writing
You make time for what’s important.
This was a hard truth for me to admit, but it’s true. Now, that’s not to say that an evening mindless scroll through Instagram isn’t something that my tired mind needs some days, but when THAT becomes a habit and not your writing, it’s not fair to say you don’t have time. You’re just not prioritizing writing.
An idea is only as good as the discipline to seek it out. Bit by bit, mountain by mountain, you can chip away at it, and one day you’ll suddenly realize you have a whole book in your hands.
No one can write this story but you and with some simple changes to your mindset and your free time, you CAN get it done!
