A. J. Ullman’s The Celestial Shot delivers a compelling murder mystery built around an audacious crime, a determined detective, and a killer whose patience may be more dangerous than the weapon itself. The third installment in the A True North Murder Mystery series, the novel combines traditional investigative suspense with a deeper examination of violence, memory, and the long reach of the past.
The story begins with the shocking murder of Cincinnati businessman Nick Vernon, who is shot while dining at the Celestial Restaurant high above the Ohio River. What makes the crime particularly baffling is the distance involved: the fatal shot comes from nearly a mile away. Detective Trueman North quickly recognizes that such a killing could not simply be the product of chance. Behind it is someone possessing remarkable skill, discipline, and, perhaps most importantly, the patience to wait for exactly the right moment.
Joined by his partner, Ronnie Huxley, North begins following the evidence through Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. What initially appears to be a straightforward investigation gradually becomes something much more complicated. The clues suggest that the killer may have spent years preparing for the murder, transforming the case from a question of opportunity into one of long-term purpose.
One of the novel’s strengths is the way Ullman allows the mystery to expand beyond the identity of the killer. Both the victim and the perpetrator carry secrets, and the deeper North digs, the more uncertain the truth becomes. The revelation that neither man is quite who he appears to be gives the investigation an additional layer of intrigue and keeps the reader questioning the motives behind the crime.
North himself adds an emotional dimension to the story. As the investigation progresses, the case forces him to confront memories of war and personal loss, reminding him that violence does not end when the immediate act is over. Its consequences can remain buried for years, resurfacing when least expected.
The idea of the past patiently waiting for justice provides the novel with an especially effective thematic foundation. The murder is not presented simply as an isolated act of violence but as the culmination of events that have been developing over decades.
The Celestial Shot is an engaging mystery for readers who enjoy carefully constructed investigations, long-hidden secrets, and protagonists carrying their own emotional burdens. Ullman combines the mechanics of a sniper mystery with a more reflective exploration of revenge, justice, and the scars left by violence. The result is a suspenseful crime story in which uncovering who pulled the trigger is only part of the mystery; understanding why they waited so long may be the more revealing question.
