“Bad Medicine” by Lance Horsman inaugurates a thrilling and intricate series that delves deep into an unseen conflict stretching across human history, entangling ancient beings and organizations in a cold war over a potent artifact, the Tufhataan. This artifact, a remnant from the dawn of creation, becomes the focal point of a struggle with humanity’s survival hanging in the balance. Amidst this grand cosmic backdrop, we are introduced to Eddie, a surly but endearing animal mage, and his magical found family, who become unwittingly embroiled in this ancient conflict.

The narrative weaves together a fascinating tapestry of characters, from Eddie and his close-knit group of magical allies to the sinister Shifting Sands, an undead Navajo Shaman, and his gang, the Alamosa Brujos. A gory confrontation in a strip bar propels the story forward, spiraling into an escalating series of events that pit Eddie and the Family against the dark forces seeking to undermine the fabric of humanity.

Horsman skillfully balances epic fantasy elements with deeply human themes, making “Bad Medicine” a compelling read. The book’s fast-paced action and vivid magical showdowns, involving an array of spells, spirit magic, and mythical creatures, are brilliantly executed, ensuring that readers are kept on the edge of their seats. Yet, it is the underlying themes of forgiveness, redemption, and the acknowledgment of human imperfections that lend the story a profound depth, setting it apart from conventional fantasy fare.

The secondary narrative following Miriam’s quest for the Tufhataan adds mystery and intrigue, linking disparate historical events and setting the stage for future installments in the series. These historical vignettes and contemporary magical warfare create a rich and varied storytelling landscape.

“Bad Medicine” is not just an action-packed fantasy; it is also a work replete with humor and heart. The humorous interactions among characters provide a counterbalance to the darker themes, showcasing Horsman’s ability to blend different tones seamlessly. The ensemble cast, each with their distinct abilities and personalities, enriches the narrative, making the reader invested in their fates.

Despite leaving some questions unanswered and setting up threads to be explored in subsequent books, “Bad Medicine” concludes the arc of Shifting Sands and the Alamosa Brujos with a satisfying sense of closure. The finale is both a thrilling climax to the book’s events and a thoughtful meditation on the themes woven throughout the story.

In summary, “Bad Medicine” is a captivating start to what promises to be an enthralling series. Lance Horsman has crafted a world where ancient magic and modern dilemmas collide, creating an entertaining and reflective fantasy. For fantasy fans looking for a series that combines action, magic, and meaningful storytelling, “Bad Medicine” is a must-read. It stands as a testament to the genre’s ability to explore the complexities of the human condition through the lens of the fantastical.

  1. completely agree. Absolutely loved this and subsequent books in the series. I have had the pleasure of getting to know Lance and can honestly say he is one of the nicest authors I have made the acquaintance of. His writing if possible improves as the series goes on and I have been honoured with a glimpse of his next series which I can honestly say has started out just as good. Loved the review by the way.
