Blood and silver is a short Young adult historical fiction written about a 12-year-old girl who lives with her mother in a brothel. The story is set in Tombstone, the year 1880, and Carissa has a lot to deal with.
If living in a brothel is not bad enough, her mother is also a drug addict. Carrisa, however, is so strong-willed and an exceptional heroine. Carrisa seeks help to relieve herself from the duties given to her. Mary, a powerful woman who controls the Tombstone, decides to help her, and this provides a better opportunity for Carrisa. She begins working along with Mary’s niece, Mai-Lin. The two become great friends. Things don’t all go as planned, and that’s when the story takes you on a journey of survival, love and friendship.
The characters are vibrant, and the bond between the two little girls is sweet. At first, I thought that the material would not be suitable for a young age; however, after reading on, I understood it to be adequate.
The story has a nice flow to it. Since it was short, there wasn’t much world-building, but instead, the historical references are spot on.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read young adult fiction and stories with a strong female lead.
