Roar Carlos by E. Vargas (Book Review #781)

Roar is a fantasy book about Ella, a 10-year-old girl who lives on a farm with her older brother, Maurice. She loves the farm life and is very happy. However, things don’t last long after her brother disappears one day. Things around the farm also fall apart. Her emotions and fear and despair fill the heart of this young girl, a man Name Van, who is a herbalist who promises her that he will help her. Van knew her parents and let her know about a dark forest where monsters roam free. Together they venture into the dark forest looking for answers.

Things are not what they seem, and the little girl soon finds out the truth about her parents, brother, and why life in the village has changed. The story is short and can be read in one sitting. Due to the story being brief, there was not much room for world-building, character development, or layers. However, what did exist was a feisty little 10-year-old that was fun to read and easy to bond with.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I recommend this story to young adult readers and fantasy lovers. I believe the author is capable of writing longer, more in-depth stories, and I look forward to reading more from him.
