The Shadows of Appalachia by Mary O. Bremier (Book Review #1347)

‘The Shadows of Appalachia’ is a memoir written about the author back in 1928, where Mary invites us into her childhood years and more.

The biography is not a short one, and it explains every detail and encounter Mary has faced. Her tragic loss of her husband and daughter is hard to read. When Mary returns to Appalachia, it is enjoyable to read how she begins to deal with her past but also finds a way of life.

The writing really stands out in this memoir. I believe it’s not just the content but the way the author’s pen keeps you wanting to know more. This is an emotional read and if you are into memoirs, then you will enjoy this one.

One Comment on “The Shadows of Appalachia by Mary O. Bremier (Book Review #1347)

  1. REVIEW- SHADOWS OF APPALACHIA by Mary G. Bremier

Mary Bremier accomplished what few autobiographers could. She gave her story, “Shadows of Appalachia,” SOUL.

Not only did she suck her readers into Appalachia’s complex, uniquely American culture, its language (her first name is pronounced Mayree), her family’s dysfunctional dynamic, her own self awareness, uneven education and effects of early dyslexia, but also the exquisite natural world around every bend, every tree, water fall, every meadow, brook and field, described with heartfelt ease.

You can smell it. You can feel it.

The book grasps hold of the reader from beginning, when Bremier is a mere tot making her way through many universes of her early experiences—a good but emotionally remote, overwhelmed and disorganized mother, a bright father with unpredictably frequent tantrums, her on-again-off-again relationships with multiple siblings, extended family, uncertainties about family-owned and disowned properties — until the present, when she claims professional status as an educator and prominent author.

Mary Bremier’s book is a must-read for anyone seeking to learn more about a little-known world of Appalachia, in the heart of America, and, more surprisingly, its SOUL.
