The Monocle by Mark Cavanagh (Book Review #2242)

The Monocle has a thrilling Story Similar to many other YA Sci-Fi Adventures. It combines Science Fiction elements like Teleportation, Time Travel, and Alien Technology in an entertaining way that hooks you. It takes place in a small Town in the 60s with lots of Nostalgia for years gone by. Viv and Mick, who are the two main characters in The Monocle, are two best friends who discover a Monocle, which is an ancient alien machine, along with a notebook full of secret codes. Once they have found it, they are thrown into a universe where time bends, Space folds, and they have incredible abilities beyond comprehension.

Mark Cavanagh has done an excellent job of writing about how a young kid can be thrown into such an intense story, full of adrenaline-pumping action and the roller coaster emotions of friendship. While the two main characters navigate the dangers of the Cosmic Universe (e.g., Government Agents, Nightmares), Viv and Mick’s bonding experiences are tested through thrilling yet heart-wrenching moments. As the reader develops a connection with Viv and Mick, he/she will root for them to not only survive, but also grow into the responsible “heroes” that influential people become.

In addition to the fact that the Plot moves at such a fast pace, the story is not all action and suspense; it also features elements of Humor, Introspection, and Real Emotion. Mark Cavanagh does an excellent job of writing about the 60s in a way that combines the Decade’s Retro Style with Futuristic Science Fiction styles. The Monocle also explores the Themes of Courage, Loyalty, and the Ethical Dilemmas of having incredible Power. It is so much more than just a simple Adventure story.

Overall, The Monocle is an exhilarating, imaginative read for Teens and Adults alike. If you enjoy Action-Packed Stories, Thought-Provoking Science Fiction, or Heartfelt Stories of Friendship, this book delivers on all three levels. Anyone who is searching for an Adventure that takes place in a small Town and ends up in Parts of the Universe that are beyond comprehension will absolutely love this book!
