Mestlven: A Tale from Perilisc by Jesse Teller (Book Review #161)

Behind every evil, there is a story – there is pain. The abused becomes the abuser. The kind spirited becomes the villain.

This tale is the latest book written by the author and I must say that he has left the best to last. Mestlven is the city where Meredith (Sob) lives in. Sob was not in love with Malcolm, her husband; she was in fact, in love with his brother that had died. Sob and Malcolm had a baby girl. Everything was fine until one day a group come and murder the baby and Malcolm. We read about the baby in Chaste, another book written by the author. This changes Meredith in becoming the deadly assassin that she becomes and she returns to get revenge on what she lost.

There are several new characters and a few taken from the previous books all embedded in this dark and twisted novel. There is no mercy for anyone, and the story is as gross and morbid as the previous ones, creating an epic ending to the dark Perilisc world.

The literary standard and the plot is just as good as the previous books. I would recommend the readers to read some of the author’s previous works before picking this one up as it will make more sense to them and it will be easier to get into.

Although the main character is dark and the crimes she and her fellow companions conduct are heart-wrenching, the writer still manages to keep the reader feeling sorry for her. It was very easy to feel and understand the deep dynamic character created within the content of the novel. I applaud such strong writing and such outstanding story writing.

I highly recommend this book to dark fantasy readers and anyone that appreciates good literature.
