“My Favorite Darracia Character and Why”
By Michael Phillip Cash
When I began writing The Battle for Darracia, I knew I wanted to include some really strong female characters. I mean, strong female characters kick ass (can I say that?). Maybe I’m wrong here, but fantasy books in the past seem to be geared toward male readers. Which is fine, but I definitely think authors should be writing for both genders. Fortunately, things are changing. Characters like The X Files’ Scully, Star Wars’ Princess Leia and even Buffy the Vampire Slayer have shown readers that girls can be just as tough as boys can.
That’s why I wrote the character of Bobbien. She’s definitely a rock star and my female version of Yoda. Creating strong, powerful and intelligent characters, to me, is incredibly important. I want my female readers to enjoy my fantasy novels just as much as males do. And judging from the feedback I’ve been getting for The Battle for Darracia, readers are responding favorably to characters like Bobbien.
I think it’s important for male writers to stretch themselves when it comes to creating characters. Just because I’m a guy doesn’t mean I can’t write from a female character’s perspective. Admittedly, it takes a bit more effort, but when you have strong real-life female role models like I do, it’s all the more doable. I’d like to urge more writers to at least experiment with female character voice writing. Readers will be highly receptive!
