The Last Day of Captain Lincoln by EXO Books (Book Review #38)

This review was kindly requested by the Author, EXO Books.

This book takes us into the future where people are living on a ship controlled and managed with a strict population law. Live a healthy, happy and fulfilling life until you are 80 and then it is your time to die. Every five years an equal amount of babies are scientifically made and all that have reached 80 years pass on.

Captain Lincoln reaches his time to say his goodbye. This book has a very emotional and moving story. Although I have seen movies and read books that revolve around the concept of time being bought or sold for life, this book was still uniquely written and was in excellent literary standard.

Lincoln celebrates his last day meeting friends and loved ones. I found that to be very sweet. The perception of death is a daunting factor. However, the logistic of things is well explained in this book where Lincoln has enough time to say everything he wants to say before dying. How many times have people wished they had more time to do things they always wanted to do or say the things they wanted to say but couldn’t due to the lack of time? Lincoln knew when the end of the line was and therefore celebrated his last day to the fullest.

The book may come sadly to some and deep to others, yet it does not dwell on the loss but on the valuable time left. As a writer, this is where the skill of EXO’s writing comes to play. The Last Day of Captain Lincoln does not provide a depressing encounter, and you do thoroughly enjoy reading this book. The focus is on Captain Lincoln, but there was still sufficient character building in the tale. The advance science and how the ship and system operates are also explained very well.

I recommend this book to any science fiction lover and reader seeking something innovative to recite.

Judas and Jezabel: The Tales of a New York Nanny by C.Y.Brown (Book Review 37)

This review is written for Online Book Club.

“I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.”

This is a domestic story about a not so happy, wealthy family. Sharon and Connor do not get along, and divorce is the only way. However, it comes with a price on both ends without hesitating to understand the psychological complications they cause towards their child and the poor nanny taking care of the kid.

Carol is not our everyday Mary Poppins but is just as sweet and caring towards Cindy. She too becomes trapped in the ordeal of the separation. Carol is even put on the spot by being asked to lie for the benefit of Sharon. The story begins by showing how one lives a luxury life and the problems the family faced as a couple.

There some grammatical and structural issues in the book, however, the author’s literary standard was easy to read and to understand. The book was 93 pages, and for me, that is pretty short. The intention of the Author for writing this story is in the introduction of the book. The Author wishes to address how society has adapted materialistic needs in such an active form that in some cases people are willing to sacrifice and replace “love, harmony, and family for the greed of riches.”

Playing a power game over each other is what Sharon and Connor seem to be battling in this tale. It focuses mostly on them rather than the nanny or the child. However, it does discuss the consequences each face due to their greed, lust, and deceiving nature both possess.

I did like that the book displayed a contradiction to what most people think and that is, money brings happiness and that rich people have it all. I also admired the exposure of the psychological impact separation has on children regardless of how nasty it gets.

This book is good for anyone that is looking for a fast, easy read.

White Bear’s Big Adventure by Marie Cheine (Book Review #305)

White Bear’s Big Adventure is a children’s book focusing on the lives of the brave children who face life-threatening illnesses every day. White bear is a stuffed toy who has been sitting on a bookshelf, in a doctors office for years. However, when a little girl walks in the office, the white bear gets to go home with the little girl.

This book is about one of the adventures he goes through as he gets lost and has to find his way back to the little girl. Angels illness is so bad that she has to consistently undergo surgeries and that’s how the bear is left behind and tossed into the laundry, by accident. This is a wonderful book for children who are going through the same struggles. There are many kids who feel like they may be alone and I felt that it was very sweet to bring a plush toy to life in order to demonstrate a child’s feeling in attachment thoughts, and their imagination.

This story would be very suitable for parents reading to their kids. The story is fun, full of adventure and has subtle learning messages that work well with the storyline. I recommend this book and enjoyed reading it.

The History of New Innovations in Modern Medicine by Dr. James D. Okun MD, Evangelita Goodwell (Book Review #16)

This book is almost like a dedicated memoir of collected physicians that have almost become forgotten by the modern society, of whom their discoveries are to this day the reason why many of us have the ability to live a longer life.

In every chapter of this book, Author, Dr. Okun & Goodwell, initially introduce us to an inventor, his background and how they discover the cure to a particular illness. In most cases, instead of being appreciated for new ideas and new ways of thinking the innovators were mocked, ignored and their works were either not published or condemned. In the end, he passionately explains how if that particular illness had no cure he and many of us would not be living to this day.

His insightful writing on how unfortunate these great minds were and how they suffered for us is heartbreaking. However, according to him, without such sufferings and their ideas, countless lives would not have been saved. He firmly believes that “every discovery could not have been possible if the person who discovered them did not have a notion of what Aristotle calls “wet and dry” otherwise known as opposites.”

I liked the fact that the Authors related their personal lives and troubles with these medical discoveries and created a relationship between the two. Because of the way they created this connection, it was much easier to see and appreciate the journey.

In summary, both authors take their time to write a book about innovations in modern medicine and in some way say thanks to all physicians that dedicated their lives and suffered a great deal for humanity, in hopes for us to gain a stronger appreciation for the arts, the sciences and ourselves. The book brings us up to date with how in fact we are now able to live a longer life.  Subsequently, teaching us not to give up on our belief and dreams even when the whole world is against us.

I recommend this book to everyone.

A Space Between Worlds Vol.1: Conception by J.D. Woodson (Book Review # 32)

I was given this book by the Author & Royal James Publishing for a review.

Here is a story written about two concepts, Shanti and Reno. This fantasy book is not like the ones you have read before. It is entirely out of the box and style of which we are accustomed to in the 21st century. The book follows Shanti and Reno’s desire to understand who they are, where they come from and unravels secrets that ultimately define their future.

The interesting part is that they are beings and nothing more. The conception is that one is a faceless songstress with a curse to remain that way, so she hides behind a disguise. The other is a florist with no recollection of his past pursuing answers, and until he finds the truth, there is nothing he can do to move forward. It is almost like he is in limbo. Are you confused yet?

Since the author has a poetic background, the book was written in a very different style of literature. There were too many explicitly written feelings and emotions that took away from the flow of the tale. The plot and storyline were fascinating. I applaud the writer’s skill in bringing forward an innovative form of a manuscript and look forward to reading more of his work.

Anyone that has read a few fantasy, science fiction books and is into deeper conceptualized content writing, can easily understand and enjoy this book. My recommendation would be that if you are picking this book up as a first time, Sci-Fi reader then, don’t.

The story is about love, redemption, strength, realism and time, all things useful and necessary.

Angel by Sebastian Michael (Book Review #33)

This review is written for Online Book Club.

“I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.”

Beauty is defined by the beholder. However, in this book Damion is so beautiful that this definition does not apply to him. He is an angel in everyone’s eye. Everyone finds him so attractive and wonderful that they are willing to do anything for him. Such power can be used for doing good or bad.

Damion does have a history, and a fire incident changes everything for him. This book is written magnificently. You will still have the story on your mind for a few days afterward. It is a twisted and psychologically intriguing story of realizing what happens when you rely on one thing your whole life and then to lose it.

Is Damion’s beauty a gift or a curse? That is one thing the reader will be contemplating throughout the whole read. Damion makes many friends, loses some and goes through a much more emotional and overwhelming journey growing up than a normal kid does.

Nothing is average when it comes to Damion and his life. The pace of the story is well written and contains a lot of backstories, which I think, may be bothersome at first. However, towards the end of the read, you realize the reason for it. The build-up of the story gives you a very emotional ending that will make you shed a tear or two.

Sebastian Michael has a very well written tale here. The book does contain suicide, death, unpleasant happenings and sexual content. Damion struggles to find the balance between people loving him for his beauty or for who he is. I found this very welcoming. A society that adores an angel and despises anything is what this story is about. Damion has to find his way, and his decision to save someone’s life changes everything for him. To be loved for whom you are within is very hard.

I recommend this book to everyone. It is twisted, delightful and deep.

Dennis and Greer by Molly Gould (Book Review #303)

Dennis and Greer is a nonfiction love story. It contains a collection of love letters and journals saved between two college students during the Vietnam Era. The story is very heartfelt and beautiful making it feel like it is a fictional story. The horrors of war and how these two lovers encounter it is truly amazing.

The letters are found fifty years after and what transpires is a strikingly real novel, making the reader ponder after it is over. The story is set in the 1960’s and when Greer’s daughter finds these letters, she then enters a world she never knew her mother had gone through.

The other intriguing factor about this book is its character development. Dennis and Greer are not the typical loved-up couple you see in Hollywood. They face trouble and their long-distance relationship does take the toll with time. Dennis is hesitant and less expressive in his feelings where Greer is the opposite. The story feels real because of this and that is what makes this book special.

The literature standard is well written and easy to follow through. The pace is steady and the connection between the paragraphs flows well. I believe anyone wishing to read a touching story and enjoys romance would find this book suitable.

Only Wrong Once by Jenifer Ruff (Book Review #316)

Only wrong once is a suspense thriller written about a very powerful ISIS leader plotting to kill innocent lives by hiring a microbiologist. He has this graduate to create a weapon, a virus, and to spread it across the American citizens.

FBI agent Quinn Traynor is adamant to stop his massacre from happening. With the help of Madeline Hamilton, he only has a few days to prevent this horrific incident from happening.

When I began reading this book, I felt that it just sounded too close to home. With everything that is currently happening in the world, this book is a good reminder of what we really are dealing with. The author displays a very realistic suspenseful feel in her writing. The principal characters grow on you and the feeling of wanting to simply demolish the bad guys runs through your veins, as you read the book.

The literature is outstanding and the descriptive nature of the storyline is strong, creating the ability for the reader to easily dive into the action scenes and imagine them as real as you want them to be. I also enjoyed the double dimensional approach the story took. It wasn’t just all about Quinn or Madeline trying to save the world. The reader also gets a glimpse of the other side. How a lonely banker ends up losing his job, and flies to Syria, getting mixed in, with ISIS.

I believe anyone looking to read on an exciting journey filled with delicious action scenes will enjoy this book.
